ONE Man Utd player singled out for praise following dire Man City defeat

MANCHESTER UNITED star Marcus Rashford was the only player who deserved praise in their defeat at home to Manchester City on Wednesday.

That’s according to former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage, who doesn’t think any other United man looks willing to work hard and track back.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side suffered their seventh defeat in nine games against their arch-rivals at Old Trafford.

Bernardo Silva fired the champions in front after 54 minutes, before Leroy Sane moved them a step closer to retaining their title 12 minutes later.

The gulf in class between the two sides was clear, but Savage believes United are simply in need of players who put hard work in.

“Rashford in the first half is the exception, I think we’ll all agree with that”

Robbie Savage

“You’ve got to find players now who want to run hard, track back, recovery runs, sprint and then the ability will shine through,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast.

“But at the minute, we’re not seeing that from any United player.

“Rashford in the first half is the exception, I think we’ll all agree with that, and they defended well.

“I thought the system was alright, but we’re talking about Man United defending well at Old Trafford!”

Savage’s comments came after it was claimed:

Manchester City ran out 2-0 winners away at Manchester United on Wednesday

Savage thinks Rashford was the only United player who worked hard at Old Trafford

Under Solskjaer’s management, United had catapulted themselves back into top-four contention after a miserable start under Jose Mourinho left them 11 points adrift of the Champions League places.

And despite Wednesday’s defeat, they are still only three points behind fourth-place Chelsea ahead of their clash with the latter at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Yet Arsenal are also in the mix, sitting two points ahead of Unite the table, and will be in the driving seat if they manage to win their next game amid United or Chelsea, or both, dropping points.

Rashford, though, made his disappointment with Wednesday’s performance clear, insisting giving their all for the United badge is ‘the bare minimum’.

Rashford admitted United's performance on Wednesday was 'not right'

“It's not right,” he said. “The bare minimum is to work hard and give all for the badge, the supporters, the club and yourself.

“It has been a tough road to get to where we are. To get there and not be putting up the same performances as we were in January is disappointing.

“We have to be real with each other. It's a matter of trying to improve each other.

“Forget the league and top four. You don't lose this game, it's that simple as a Manchester United fan.”
