Ex-Reds Flop Sold For £5.4m is Now More Prolific Than Firmino

If there is one moment to sum up Iago Aspas’ time at Liverpool, it will be thatcorner.

With Liverpool looking for an equalising goal in stoppage time against Chelsea, the Reds were awarded a corner that could win them a point. Up steps Aspas, who raises his arm, and passes the ball straight to Willian who promptly ran the clock down and secured the three points for the west London side.

It was to be Aspas’ only notable moment in a Liverpool shirt. After joining the Merseyside club in the summer of 2013, the Spanish striker was seen as a smart signing for the club. The forward only cost Brendan Rodgers a reported fee of £9 million from Celta Vigo and was joining the club on the back of a 12-goal season in La Liga.

Despite scoring in his unofficial debut for Liverpool in a pre-season friendly against Preston North End, Aspas’ time in England was disappointing to put it lightly.

In a season that saw Liverpool come agonisingly close to winning the Premier League title and Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez forming one of the most formidable strike forces in the history of the division, Aspas is never remembered for his impact in the team.

The Spaniard only scored once for the club that season, netting the opening goal in a 2-0 win against Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup, and after just one year on Merseyside the striker was shipped out on loan to Sevilla for the 2014/15 season.

In his returning year in Spain, Aspas found relative success with Sevilla, scoring 10 goals in 26 appearances for the club. With no plans to be used in the Liverpool team the striker was sold back to Celta in the summer of 2015, and since then fortunes have changed dramatically for the attacker.

Since returning to his boyhood club, Aspas has hit 84 goals in 150 games in all competitions for Celta, a better record than what Roberto Firimno has managed at Liverpool whilst guiding the La Liga side to their first European campaign in over a decade and taking the Spanish side to their first Europa League semi-final ever.

Regular call-ups for the Spain national team and a goal in the 2018 World Cup have seen Aspas make the ultimate comeback after a woeful spell at Liverpool, who has since made that corner a ghost of the past.
