6 Teams Lionel Messi Has Failed To Score Against In The Champions League - No. 5's Jinx Has Been Broken
Lionel Messi seems to break new boundaries and records every season, with the 31-year-old arguably the greatest player in the history of the sport. The striker has been in brilliant form once again this season and is the leading scorer across the top five European Leagues.
However, despite his success, Messi has failed to score against six of the 37 teams he has faced in the Champions League. Here, we take a look at his record against these teams.
6. Udinese
Lionel Messi has played one game against Italian side, Udinese and failed to score in the 70 minutes and it does not look like he will change that stat anytime soon, considering that Italians are struggling in the Serie A.
5. Liverpool
The Argentinian has faced Liverpool twice in the Champions League, last coming up against them in the round of 16 in the 2006-07 campaign. The first leg ended in a 2-1 win for the Reds at the Nou Camp and despite Barcelona beating Liverpool 1-0 in the second leg, it was not enough for them to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Messi played the whole 180 minutes but failed to find the back the net.
4. Benfica
Another surprising side that the 31-year-old has struggled against is Benfica, with Messi playing two games and going 119 minutes without finding the back of the net. However, he has registered two assists against them so far.
3. Inter Milan
In three games and 270 minutes against Inter Milan, the Argentinian has struggled to make an impact, with Barcelona's loss in the semi-final of the 2010 edition, one of the most disappointing games of his career.
He might get an opportunity to break the duck in the near future.
2. Rubin Kazan
It is very surprising to see Messi struggle against sides who are inferior to Barcelona, but that's just what happened, with the striker frustrated when playing Russian side, Rubin Kazan.
The 31-year-old has played four games and gone 237 minutes without scoring against the Russian side.
1. Atletico Madrid
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has struggled against his fellow Spanish side, Atletico Madrid in Europe, despite scoring against them quite prolifically in domestic competitions. Messi has played four games and gone a full 360 minutes against them without finding the back of the net.
